Tectonic Plates
The surface of the earth (this includes under the sea) is made up of seven large plates. These plates move across the earth, very slowly, and interact at their boundaries to make earthquakes and volcanoes. The movement of the crustal plates, or tectonic plates, comes from the flow of liquid rock beneath the surface of the earth.

The earth is a very active planet.
We have volcanoes, earthquakes in and under the surface.
We have an atmosphere which can become very violent.
We can be struck by the enormous force of a lightening strike.
We have to live among all this activity.
Science can help us understand these very active forces and help us live more safely.
