Our Earth; Model of its Structure
Our earth has several layers.
The surface layer is VERY THIN. It is only about 5 to 50km thin!
This makes it less than 1% of the radius of the earth!
We do not appreciate how thin is our surface. The surface of the earth is sometimes called the Lithosphere, which is composed of the upper crust, 5 km thick in the oceans and 65 km thick on the continents,
and the upper mantle, which makes up the remainder.

A simple model of the Earth's Structure
This shows its different layers
This model is constantly being changed because we cannot go deeper than a couple of km. The structure has been inferred from data collected from instruments.
Students will use the web to update this model and add more detail, in particular how the lithosphere is different to the asthenosphere.
